The first-generation Phonly is a Samsung Galaxy A14, an affordable, established Android device running Enterprise-grade Mobile Device Management (MDM) software by Esper. This device can reliably handle all of the allowed Phonly apps, at a price point that makes a child's lost or broken phone a minor inconvenience.
The second-generation Phonly is now shipping on a Samsung Galaxy A16. Esper MDM still enforces the Phonly app set, School Mode still follows the schedule you set, and the hardware stays purposely inexpensive. This is a device that families can put in a backpack without fear.
Your Phonly device is pre-configured with MDM software and a cellular data plan. Open the box and make a call.
Parents (or School Administrators) configure when each mode applies, and children cannot override or escape from it.

When School Mode is on, your child's phone is limited to call, text, contacts, calendar, and clock. When School Mode is off, parents choose one of three pre-defined Home profiles:
